Description
Also known as Bog Birch. Low, spreading, deciduous shrub with small oval-shaped, thick leathery leaves and small “wart-like” glands on the red-copper twigs. Foliage turns striking yellow and/or red in the fall. Found naturally in rocky, moist, nutrient-poor sites as well as well drained, upland steep banks and dry rocky slopes. Extremely cold-hardy (native to the Arctic Tundra!) it is a unique choice in rock gardens as a specimen plant, or planted as a unique, low border or hedge that tolerates light pruning in the landscape. Provides good erosion control and wildlife browse and habitat on reclamation sites.
