Description
This aromatic, grass-like herb, considered sacred by indigenous people through out the US and Canada, is used as a smudge or in herbal teas and medicines. It can also be used in the production of distilled beverages. The native habitat of Sweetgrass is wetland and riparian areas. Please note: it is said to NOT be appropriate to harvest from native stands. Known as “the hair of Mother Earth” it is typically braided in long sections and dried, then burned as a cleansing ritual; it has a vanilla-like scent when burned. The 3 braid strands are said to represent the mind, body and spirit. Due to it’s prolific rhizome production, it can be considered invasive and is recommended to be planted “at home” in a pot where the spread can be well-controlled, preferring a rich, well-drained soil and full sun.
