Also known as the “Boxelder Maple”, it is a fast-growing but short-lived tree, that usually survives about 75 years.  It tolerates difficult sites and many soil conditions, including street plantings and parks.   The Boxelder is excellent for pollinators because of it’s early blooms and is also an excellent choice for erosion control.  The sap has a high sugar content and Native Americans boiled it down to make syrups and candy, the cambium was used as a food source and the bark was boiled to make a tea for stomach issues.
