Description

Small and compact tree to 20 feet. Clusters of white flowers in spring followed by large edible scarlet berries that turn black and persist into winter. Excellent source of winter food for birds. One inch thorns on branches. Habitat is moist, open places, stream sides, roadsides, forest edges. Native American used thorns to pierce ears, for fish hooks, playing pieces for games. Berries were eaten both fresh and dried, sometimes mixed with oil or grease.
