Description
A biennial flowering plant in the phlox family. Bright green comb-like leaves and red, pink or white trumpet flowers . Traditional medicinal uses include treatment of cold symptoms, rheumatism and skin irritation. Begins blooming midsummer and lasts through fall. Commonly 1-3′ tall, but noted as large as 6′ tall, it is a fave of hummingbirds, hawk moths and commonly grazed by deer, elk, etc. Prefers well drained soil in full sun or part shade. In a garden setting, take care not to overwater.
