Description
This small native bunchgrass is one of the most adaptable of the Bluegrass family. Generally no taller than 12″-18″, it grows in many different soil types and areas including semi-desert, upland and mountain sites. Will go dormant in the summer months if it doesn’t get enough moisture, or can be kept green with regular watering. Provides good forage for cattle, sheep, deer, and pronghorn in spring and early summer. The Sandburg’s Bluegrass is noted to be one of the 6 most important rangeland grasses in the northwest, and is recognized as a pioneer species after significant land disturbances. The extensive and deep root system makes it particularly drought tolerant and resistant to grazing and trampling.
