Description

Unlike it’s “wilder” cousins, this little dude does well in the shade!  It is easy to identify because of location, and the stems are lined with many soft, hairy,  straight prickles and topped with small, very fragrant, pale pink rose flowers.  2-5′ in dry or moist forest conditions, with a 2-3′ spread.  The bald hips that follow the flowers are pear-shaped and persist in to the winter months. They are often enjoyed by whitetail and mule deer, as well as other small mammals, birds and insects.  Native Americans made tea from the leaves and toasted or smoked the leaves and bark mixed with tobacco.  A slurry made from the bark was used as an eyewash solution as well as chewed leaves were applied to bee stings for relief.
  • Drought Tolerant: yes
  • Evergreen: yes, moderately
  • Flower Color: pale pink
  • Mature Height: 2-5′
